Off-the-shelf curricula are a failure of architecture.

Why buying a curriculum is not the same as designing a learning experience — and what a homeschool built by an instructional architect actually looks like.

I

The Category Error

A curriculum is a rectangle of content. A learning experience is something else entirely.

Buying a curriculum is procurement. Designing a curriculum is architecture. The confusion between the two is the single most common failure mode of intelligent, well-resourced homeschooling parents. It looks like doing the work. It feels like doing the work. It is not the work.

A curriculum, as it arrives in a box or a subscription, is a rectangle of content: lessons, worksheets, textbooks, videos, assessments. A learning experience is a temporal sequence of cognitive events arranged so that specific schemata form in a specific mind. These are different objects. The first can be purchased. The second cannot.

Buying a curriculum will never produce a learning experience — any more than buying bricks will produce a house.

What follows is not an argument for or against any particular curriculum. It is an argument that even the best curriculum is raw material. The architect — the parent or tutor at the kitchen table — is the person who decides what gets built.


II

Cognitive Load Theory

Working memory is finite. Every teaching decision either wastes it or invests it.

John Sweller’s Cognitive Load Theory is the closest thing instructional design has to a first-principles physics. It states, quietly and inconveniently, that human working memory holds only a handful of unrelated elements at once — and every teaching decision either respects that limit or exceeds it.

Sweller divides the load into three:

Intrinsic load

The difficulty inherent to the material itself — the number of interacting elements a learner must hold in mind simultaneously to make sense of a concept. Algebra has higher intrinsic load than arithmetic. Systems biology has higher intrinsic load than a labelled diagram. You cannot reduce intrinsic load without reducing the material. You can only sequence around it.

Extraneous load

The difficulty imposed by how the material is presented — poor diagrams, split attention across pages, jargon deployed before its scaffolding, tests written to trick rather than reveal. Extraneous load is the enemy. Every hour you spend as an architect should be spent driving it toward zero.

Germane load

The productive effort of building schema — the work of connecting new material to prior knowledge, generalising across examples, refining a mental model. This is the load that produces learning. Every hour you rescue from extraneous load can be re-invested here.

The homeschool advantage — the one that no institutional classroom can reproduce — is that a 1-on-1 setting lets the architect drive extraneous load to zero. Group instruction cannot, because every learner arrives with a different baseline schema and therefore a different intrinsic load for the same material. The teacher of twenty-eight must pitch at an average that fits no one. The parent of one is not bound by that constraint.

The parent architect can spend an hour designing where a teacher spends a minute. That is not a small advantage. It is the entire advantage.

Do not squander it by outsourcing the sequencing decision to a boxed curriculum designed for a phantom average child that has never existed and never will.

III

Backward Design

Wiggins and McTighe were right. Most curricula are still built forward.

Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe named the pathology plainly: most curricula are built coverage-forward — start on page one, work through to the end, hope for the best. The architect’s alternative is Backward Design, and it inverts the sequence completely.

Stage 01

Identify desired results.

Not the coverage list. The three-to-five enduring understandings that would survive if everything else were forgotten. What do you want the child to still hold in ten years? That question is the foundation. Most curricula never ask it.

Stage 02

Determine acceptable evidence.

What artefact would convince a stranger that the child holds these understandings? A test score will not do it. An essay might. A defended project almost certainly will. The evidence is the contract — not the exit. You design toward the artefact from day one.

Stage 03

Plan the learning experiences.

Only now do you touch content. Only now do you consult the shelf. And you consult it as an architect consults a supplier — sceptically, comparatively, and with a specific brief in hand. Most families do this stage first and never do stages one or two at all.

The Progress Portfolio is a Backward Design artefact. Evidence is the contract — not the exit — of a learning experience.

The Four Architectural Moves

Four decisions the architect makes. Each is either present in your child’s day, or absent.

CLT and Backward Design produce the foundation. Four operational moves — borrowed from decades of applied learning science — are what the architect does with them at the daily level.

Sequence

Order matters more than content. A well-sequenced average curriculum will outperform a poorly-sequenced excellent one. The architect owns the sequence — the curriculum is only raw material for it.

Chunk

Working memory holds roughly seven elements. New material must arrive in chunks that fit inside that budget, with schemata pre-built to compress each chunk before the next lands.

Interleave

Do not block topics. Deliberately mix related sub-topics across a session. Interleaving looks less efficient in the moment and produces markedly better long-term retention. This is well replicated.

Retrieve

The spacing effect and testing effect are the two most robust findings in learning science. Have the child pull information out of their head, spaced across days, weeks, months. Not to grade. To consolidate.

Do This Next Week

A five-step architect’s protocol for one subject.

  1. — 01Pick one subject. Any subject. Ignore the others for now.
  2. — 02Write down — on paper, not in an app — the three enduring understandings you want the child to still hold in ten years.
  3. — 03Describe the artefact you would accept as evidence. Not a test. An artefact. What could a stranger inspect that would convince them?
  4. — 04Only now, look at what you own. Delete the parts that do not serve the artefact. Reorder the parts that do.
  5. — 05Rebuild the sequence backward from the artefact. That sequence is your curriculum. You just designed one.

Repeat quarterly. Within one year the boxed curriculum will feel like what it always was — a suggestion.

Closing

The instructional architect at home is not a teacher. They are a designer with one client — a specific mind.

A curriculum, arriving in a box, is designed for no one. The architect — slow, deliberate, working backward from evidence, respecting the cognitive budget of a real learner — is designing for someone in the room. The asymmetry is enormous. Only families that recognise the asymmetry harvest it.
